What to wear? A few tips of on camera fashion.

Many of you have probably ran into the same issue the day before your family portrait...."WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?" Here are a few guidelines that I have found useful for families. A little list of...Do's and Don'ts.

Here are the DO'S:

  1. Do Plan Ahead: Once you book your session, start thinking of the clothes right away. You may think certain clothes will fit your kids or that one dress is clean. If you wait until the day of or day before you may run into an issue of clothes not fitting, being dirty or need to be dry cleaned. You can also make it a fun day out with the family by going clothes shopping and getting the perfect look!
  2. Do Color Coordinate: Long gone are the days of everyone wearing a white shirt and matching. Instead, pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme. Also, coordinate with your home scheme. Make sure you are wearing colors you won't mind hanging on the wall.
  3. Do Accessorize: Accessories not only add to your outfit but they can be fun to use in photos. Have the man wear a tie for the woman to hold. Necklaces for the kids to play with or hats to hide behind. Chunky jewelry is also fun because it looks great on camera! Go bold, Get creative!
  4. Do Texturize: I know we all love a classic plain T, but why not add a little more dimension to your look? Choose a scarf or belt to add a little more detail to your image. Remember, textures are your friend.
  5. Do Consider Your Background: If you have planned on getting your portrait done in an area that has a mostly green backdrop, throw that lovely green top into the "Not to wear" pile. Instead, consider a rust orange, navy blue, or soft yellow to compliment the scene.
  6. Do Think Classic: These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. By choosing simple, classic clothes you will help give your images a timeless feel. A blouse, skirt and heels is a great classic look. For men, a simple button down shirt and tie with jeans and boots. The sky is the limit!

And the Don'ts:

  1. Don't Show Too Much Skin: Now I know there are certain sessions that ask for the opposite, such as boudoir. But in this case, lets keep it classy. Too much skin will distract the eye from the face. Put the cute mini skirt down, and maybe go with a nice mid-length skirt. Instead of a spaghetti strap shirt, try a nice T, or blouse. This goes for shoes as well. I know flip flops are the ultimate summer shoe, but they are not so cute on camera. Boots, strappy heels, and pumps are great for portraits.
  2. Don't Wear Distractions: Clashing colors can significantly detract from the beauty of your portrait, and other tones can make family members appear washed-out or cause people to blend into the background. Take some time to think about the best colors to wear, given the setting, family member's coloration, and the area in your home where you'll display the images. Try to avoid wearing: Stripes, Polka dots, Plaids, Checks, Paisley, Graphic designs, or Company logos
  3. Don't Stress: No matter what you choose to wear for your family portrait, make sure everyone feels comfortable and relaxed in their clothes. This will lead to beautiful smiles and natural poses, and you'll end up with a gorgeous family photo you'll love displaying for many years to come.

These simple Do's and Don'ts will help you get that perfect photo to be displayed on the wall for all to see! Remember, this is only a guideline. Feel free to express yourself, don't be shy! I want your personality to shine through, for that is what makes a great photo!

Have a great night all! See you soon!
